OW Early Bird
The eponymously named 'Early Bird' (ref. 72), paid tribute to the world's first geosynchronous communications satellite, the Intelsat 1 Early Bird which launched earlier the same year. However, unlike its namesake, the Ollech & Wajs Early Bird was not made for outer-space. It was created specifically for US pilots and radio operators serving in Vietnam, for whom a 24 hour 'military time' dial would be invaluable. Most of the original Early Birds were ordered by via adverts in black and white newspapers like the Army Times and Stars and Stripes. The new owners were pleasantly surprised when the watch arrived to see that it had a striking blue and red bezel. It is estimated that no more than five hundred Early Birds were made.
